When you start Windows XP may encounter a blank desktop with no icons and no taskbar, this is due to failure to initiate the process explorer.exe, which can be the result of a virus or system crash.
Possible solutions are:
Check the following registry keys (regedit to start CTRL + ALT + DEL and Task Manager select File> New Task (Run ...)> Type Regedit and press OK):
- A registry key locks to start Explorer.exe verify the existence and eventually eliminate it:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Image File Execution Options \ explorer.exe
- If the problem occurs with Internet Explorer to check the existence, and possibly delete the following key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Image File Execution Options \ iexplorer.exe
- Check the existence of the registry key that sets the Shell Explorer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ WindowsLogon \ Shell = Explorer.exe
If none of the above solution is decisive can be groped on System Restore.
When the system is running, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and Task Manager, select File> New Task (Run ...) and launch C: \% WinDir% \ system32 \ restore \ rstrui.exe
